The area shown in the map is divided by the red line down the centre into England (right) and Wales (left). The Rivers Wye and Lugg are shown in blue; other rivers are shown in black. The horizontal line is 52oN and the vertical line is 3oW.
The Wye is one of the principal rivers of Great Britain. Its length is about 135 miles, and its basin covers an area of some 1600 square miles. From a spring, high on the slopes of Plynlimmon, it winds its way through some of the most beautiful and unspoilt countryside of Wales and England, to discharge into the tidal portion of the Severn at Chepstow. Not all this water is navigable of course: the Collision Regulations apply on the River Wye from Hay-on-Wye to Chepstow Bridge, and on the River Lugg from the canal viaduct at Withington (not shown on the map - yet) to its confluence with the River Wye. |
