Safe Navigation
|
Our modern task remains that which was set out in the Rivers Wye and Lugg Navigation Acts 1662 to 1809, that is, to make and maintain navigation on the Rivers Wye and Lugg. We do so through adhering to established best practice in inland waterways management and engineering, with a particular concern for navigation safety and proper seamanship.
In maintaining the inland navigation on the Rivers Wye and Lugg, the navigation trustees have, using the bye-law making powers in the Company of Proprietors' Act of 1809, confirmed the application of the International Regulations for Preventing Collision at Sea 1972 (generally known as the Collision Regulations), as amended, to the Rivers Wye and Lugg. |
| These regulations as applied on the Rivers Wye and Lugg follow verbatim the Collision Regulations as applied throughout the United Kingdom. The sole difference is the addition of a Rule 39, allowing for local exemption from the regulations. But for that rule, our version of the Collision Regulations can therefore be used by navigators throughout the country, and indeed anywhere in the world that the Collision Regulations are used.
The Collision Regulations apply on the River Wye from Hay-on-Wye to Chepstow Bridge, and on the River Lugg from the canal viaduct at Withington to its confluence with the River Wye. The Collision Regulations file of this website presents the Collision Regulations as they apply on these rivers. |
